Product Review: Better Oats

Ok so I know you’re all like what’s Better Oats…WELL it’s the best tasting oatmeal on the market. I love oatmeal and I have never tasted anything this good. They have: Oat Revolution, Abundance, Good n Hearty, Lavish (Chocolate), Muffins, Oat Fit, Oat Heads, RAW: Pure and Simple, and Naturals Instant Oatmeal.

The ones I have tried are Abundance and Muffins.

Abundance I buy Maple and Brown Sugar and Muffins I get Maple Streusel

You’re wondering what is SSSOOO GREAT about Oatmeal I will tell you.

Abundance has:

  • 6 whole grains, 30g per serving
  • Real fruit pieces
  • Omega-3 from flaxseed
  • Good source of protein and fiber

As you can tell Abundance has: Whole grain oats, flaxseed, barley, quinoa, etc. NOTHING BUT FIBER!! YUMMY!!

Now when it comes to Muffins

  • Thick and hearty texture
  • 30 grams of whole grains per serving
  • 220 mg of ALA Omega-3 per serving
  • Excellent source of antioxidant vitamins A & E
  • Good source of Fiber

mmm….Muffins has whole grain rolled oats and flaxseed.

THIS OATMEAL IS AMAZING!!! What makes it so cool is that they come in little packets that allow you to measure your water into the packet and pour it into the oatmeal and stick it in the microwave. Honestly this is the coolest thing since sliced bread.

Go to betteroats.com or your nearest grocery store and try it out for yourself.

I myself HATE artificial sugars because they leave the worst after taste in your mouth. Have you ever drank Muscle Milk and it has a weird after taste but you’re not sure what it is. Well, that after taste is the artificial sugar called: Sucralose. YUCKY!!! YUCK!! GROSS! Some of the brands on the market are of course: Sweet n Low, Equal, Splenda, Truvia, etc.

It’s time to learn about these artificial sugars that are contained in these products and I will share a secret at the end of this post about Splenda that some of you might not know. Saccharin, Aspartame, and Sucralose are the 3 that will be discussed.

Saccharin is also known as Sweet n Low. It is the safest of the 3. Saccharin is used in common foods that we may use on a daily basis for example: baked goods, jams, gum, canned fruit, candy, dessert toppings, and salad dressings. The only BAD thing about Saccharin is that there are side effects to individuals who are allergic to sulfa.

Aspartame is known as Nutra Sweet and Equal. It is found in 6000 foods. (WOW 6000, I learned something new) It does provide calories but it is 160-220 times sweeter than sucrose (as you know sucrose is just table sugar).  Here are some examples of how much aspartame is in some products:

  • 12 oz. of diet soda: up to 225 mg
  • 8 oz drink from powder: up to 100 mg
  • 8 oz yogurt: 80 mg
  • 3/4 of sweetened cereal: 32 mg
  • 1 packet of equal: 22 mg

The FDA has set the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) for aspartame at 50 mg/kg of body weight. To determine your ADI, divide your weight in pounds by 2.2 and then multiply it by 50.  The side effects of aspartame that have been reported are:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Change of mood
  • Depression (must avoid aspartame if dealing with depression)
  • Increased hunger

Sucralose is one of the newest sweeteners (Splenda) on the market and is 600 times sweeter than sucrose. It has no calories and it is not absorbed into our bodies like sugar is.  Sucralose was discovered while trying to create an insecticide. Sucralose is made when sugar is treated with trityl chloride, acetic anhydride, hydrogen chlorine, thionyl chloride, and methanol in the presence of dimethylformamide, 4-methylmorpholine, toluene, methyl isobutyl ketone, acetic acid, benzyltriethlyammonium chloride, and sodium methoxide. In other words it is MAN MADE, this is why it doesn’t fully absorb into your body. The most dangerous part of sucralose is Chlorine. YES, Chlorine. Some of the reported side effects of Sucralose are:

  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Skin irritation
  • Wheezing
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Chest pains
  • Palpitations
  • Anxiety
  • Anger
  • Mood Swings
  • Depression
  • Itchy Eyes

No long term studies on the effects of sucralose on the body have been done. Check out: http://jstevens.wordpress.com/2008/02/20/how-sucralose-aka-splenda-is-made-and-why-you-want-to-avoid-it/ for more information on Splenda. Splenda doesn’t digest well in our bodies but it does cause stomach cramping depending on how much you ingest. Therefore I don’t recommend using Splenda.

In my opinion I try to avoid artificial sugars as much as possible because me personally I don’t like the aftertaste. When you look at certain items usually the last ingredient is the artificial sugar. Check it out and let me know where you have seen artificial sugars.
